Wouldn't sello tape take the paint off walls?

I asked previously how people hang their indoor Xmas lights on things & most of them said they use clear Sello tape...would this harm the paint on the walls when you take it off? What's the Canadian/American equivilent to Sello tape? (I have no idea what that is - though when I googled it it looks like plain clear tape...packing tape? Masking tape? Scotch tape..?)
